What's Happening:

Congressional leaders in Washington, DC just passed a federal budget bill that cuts $1 trillion from health care. Seniors, veterans, children, people with disabilities and hard-working people who count on Medicaid (called Medi-Cal in California) will lose their care. Hospitals will close, and costs for everyone in California will soar.

It’s not just your health care, your family’s health care, or your neighbor’s health care at risk – these cuts are a threat to services that keep people working, out of emergency rooms, and off the streets.

Why You Should Be Concerned:

Cuts Hit Our Bank Accounts Hardest

Eliminating Medi-Cal coverage now means overcrowded emergency rooms and more expensive care later – costs that fall on all of us.

Rural & Local Hospitals at Risk

Rural hospitals and community clinics will be forced to scale back their operations or shut down entirely, especially in the Central Valley and Inland Empire where options for care are already limited. We’ll have to drive farther and wait longer whether we need basic care or when an urgent health crisis threatens someone’s life.

Working Families will Feel the Pinch

Millions of Californians, including small business owners, veterans, and in-home caregivers, rely on Medi-Cal to afford prescriptions and checkups. At a time when many of us have to stretch every dollar to make ends meet, cuts force working families to spend more to stay healthy.

Cuts Take Away Our Freedom to Choose a Healthy Life

When families lose access to preventative care like routine checkups, cancer screenings, blood tests, addiction treatment, and support for healthy eating habits — we lose our freedom to stay healthy, keep our jobs, and maintain our economic independence.

What Californians Are Saying:

Most Californians – including majorities of Republican and Independent voters – support protecting and maintaining Medi-Cal as it exists today, before Congress’s deep cuts take effect.

Republicans 62%
Independents (NPP) 75%
Democrats 80%
